Geotechnics

From quarry design to restoration

Our engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers collect and analyse data for rock masses and engineering soils using the latest technology.

Data collection

Whether you need us to collect data using our in-house tools, or supervise data collection from window sampling, CPT testing and laboratory testing, our team manage projects efficiently and provide due-diligence to ensure safety of your people and end users.

Modelling

Once we have your data, we model the ground characteristics to produce factual and design reports for surface and underground excavations, tips, lagoons and embankments, and structural loading.

We have a wide range of rock and soil geotechnical analysis software that help us do this.

Expert Witness services

Our expert geologists and geotechnical engineers provide impartial expert-witness services to produce robust evidence, giving inspectors the information needed to make well-informed decisions and reduce the need for appeals.

Our geotechnical services

Geotechnical Assessments and quarry compliance

Our chartered advisors help you maintain compliance with industry regulations, including the Quarries Regulations 1999, by preparing compliance documentation and regulatory submissions. We also prepare and review Regulations 31 Excavation and Tip Rules, including Job Cards. Whether you require a full geotechnical assessment, an independent audit, or a compliance review for your quarry, we provide clear, practical advice tailored to your operational requirements.

Stability and hazard analysis

Minimise risk, get clarity over hazards and support safe quarry operations with our detailed risk assessments and hazard mapping. We use the latest advanced geotechnical modelling techniques, from slope and excavation stability assessments for active and proposed workings, to rockfall analysis (2D and 3D), kinematic analysis, limit equilibrium modelling or finite element analysis. Our qualified and experienced team prioritise safety for all.

Rock engineering and slope design

Ensure safety and efficiency with effective rock engineering and slope design, slope stabilisation and optimisation of slope angles and bench design. We use detailed fracture mapping to characterise rock mass behaviour and design slope stabilisation solutions including netting, bolting, and drainage systems to the highest industry standards.

Expert witness and advisory services

Our chartered geologists have decades of experience meeting legislative demands. Whether you need an impartial expert witness, independent technical advice and forensic investigation of geotechnical incidents, or clear, evidence-based reporting for use in courts, tribunals, or public inquiries, talk to one of our advisors for an informal chat to see how we can support you.

Training and technical development

From bespoke geotechnical training for site personnel, engineers, and managers to practical and classroom-based modules, all our training is delivered by experienced geotechnical professionals with industry and academic credentials.

Classroom modules include:

I've worked with LMCL for many years on a wide range of projects, including site investigations, quarry development plans, Geotechnical Assessments, planning applications and PERC compliant reporting of Reserves and Resources. They consistently deliver high-quality work and have always provided practical, well considered advice. Just as importantly, they're approachable, friendly and easy to work with, which makes the whole process that much smoother.
